St. Peter's was until recently the largest church ever built and it remains one of the holiest sites in Christendom. St. Peter's Basilica stands on the traditional site where Peter - the apostle who is considered the first pope - was crucified and buried. St. Peter's tomb is under the main altar and many other popes are buried in the basilica as well. Originally founded byConstantinein324, St. Peter's Basilica was rebuilt in the 16th century by Renaissance masters including Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini.
In the morning you will make your way to the Basilica of St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, housing the Tomb of St. Paul the Apostle, affectionately known as the Apostle of the Gentiles. It was here that On April 22, 1541, Ignatius and five Companions made their solemn vows, and then celebrated Mass at the altar of the Virgin. Lanciano and Manoppello: the Sanctuary of the Eucaristic Miracle and the Holy Face
A daily excursion to visit the Holy place of Lanciano and Manoppello.
The Miracle of Lanciano dates back to the eighth century: during Holy Mass, after the two-fold consecration, the host was changed into live Flesh and the wine was changed into live Blood. It has been certified by the Catholic Church as a Eucharistic miracle.
In the afternoon you will have a special possibility to visit the Basilica of the Holy Face, one of the most suggestive place of the Catholic Church.
The “Holy Face” is a very tenuous Veil, stretched between two framed panes of glass. In order to avoid running the risk of damaging the mysteriously impressed Image, the Veil has not yet been removed from the reliquary to verify scientifically the kind of staple that at a glance seems to be an ancient sea-byssus fiber, a precious "marine silk" also found inside some sarcophagi of the Egyptian pyramids, the "fine linen" mentioned forty-six times, neither more nor less, in the Bible.
Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus is an ancient devotion in the Catholic Church and has been cultivated in every century.
