Rome has always been a lively center attracting many different cultures from different parts of the world. The Jewish presence in Rome has been a very long one and is still visible and bustling today.

Trastevere literally means beyond the Tiber, and it was originally connected to the main city of Rome by a tiny wooden bridge. Immigrants, mainly Jews and Syrians, arrived from the East and settled in the area.

We will visit the site of Rome’s Jewish Ghetto. In Italian, the ghetto was called Serraglio delli Ebrei, which mean the enclosure of the Jews.

You will see the Synagogue of Rome in what is today a charming area, known for its restaurants and some of the best food in Rome.

Our chef will be delighted to reveal all, during an authentic culinary demonstration. You will discover the origins of a centuries-old, gastronomic kosher tradition. Strap on your aprons and prepare to experience the making of a delicious meal involving all your senses. After cooking, you can sit and relax at the table and enjoy the lunch which you have created with your own hands!

Day 4: Rome

The first great European Jewish Exile and the first time Jews represent an independent Jewish State, both are part of the story of the Jews of Rome. From the beginning the meaning and challenges of life in exile. This is also the day we introduce the first great Roman culture, Pagan Rome of Emperors, Caesars, Senators, Citizens, Slaves

To tell these stories we visit the Forum Romanum the Arch of Titus and the Coliseum.

Once outside, the visite continues in the nearby Roman Forum, where some of the most fundamental monuments in the history of Rome can be seen, such as the Curia, the centre of the Roman Senate, temples including the funeral altar of Julius Caesar, the remains of the magnificent House and Temple of the Vestals, and the Arch of Titus, with decorations recalling the Jewish religion.
