Castles & Charms: Exploring Majestic Fortresses Around Trieste
Exploring castles near Trieste can lead you to some incredibly scenic and historically rich spots.
The Miramare Castle is an elegant white-ivory building situated on the tip of the Karst promontory of Grignano, a few kilometers from the city of Trieste. Constructed in Istrian stone and in an eclectic style, based on the design of the Austrian engineer Carl Junker, the building was constructed between 1856 and 1860 as the residence of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg and his consort, Princess Charlotte of Belgium. The castle's turret was designed by the Viennese architect Carl Junker between 1856 and 1860 when Maximilian of Habsburg decided to establish his residence on the Miramare promontory.
Duino Castle was erected in the 14th century on the ruins of a Roman military outpost. In the eighteenth century it became a cultural and humanistic center, keeping this tradition active to this day. Numerous distinguished guests have followed over time: Elizabeth of Austria (Sissi), Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and the Counts of Chambord, Johann Strauss, Franz Liszt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Gabriele d'Annunzio, Paul Valery and finally, the most illustrious of all, Bohemian poet Rainer Maria Rilke, author of the "Duine Elegies" ( the first two composed during one of his stays at the Castle, a guest of Princess Marie Thurn und Taxis).
More than 18 rooms can be visited, dense with evidence of the century-long history of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis and their ancestors. Guided tours in various languages can be booked in advance. Don't miss: Palladio's Staircase, an architectural masterpiece; the 1810 forte-piano on which Liszt played; and the extraordinary view of the gulf from the sheer outer ramparts and the tower's viewing terrace, which rests on a Roman guard outpost from the Diocletian period (AD III).
