PRIVATE - Castro Heritage Trek: From Ancient Myths to Archaeology
A cultural itinerary designed to explore the millennia-old history of Castro, blending myth, archaeology, and architecture.
The tour begins at the evocative Port of Aeneas, traditionally associated with the Trojan hero’s landing, and then ascends to the Aragonese Castle, an ancient fortress overlooking the promontory. Inside the castle, the Antonio Lazzari Archaeological Museum preserves important artifacts documenting the area’s history from prehistory to the classical era, including the colossal statue of the goddess Minerva, symbol of the ancient Castrum Minervae.
The visit continues at the Cathedral of the Annunciation, built in the 12th century on the remains of a Greek temple, adorned with Byzantine frescoes and architectural elements from subsequent periods.
The tour concludes at the archaeological excavation area, which offers an important testimony of the site’s historical and religious layers, including remains of fortifications and sacred structures dedicated to the city’s ancient protector deity.
