You will discover early Christian Rome by peeling back layers and millenniums of history as you descend into the Eternal city’s underground burial chambers, to a time when Christianity was considered a cult, whose members were executed as heretics and buried as martyrs.
These long corridors house hundreds of burial chambers, from modest singles to extravagant family tombs.
Another discovery that will stay with you long after you have returned home, is the Capuchin Crypt also known as the “Bine Chapel of Rome” decorated with the bones of 4,000 Capuchin monks.
This moderately lit crypt consists of five chapels, each of which is decorated with bones, skulls and sometimes even complete skeletons
The Capuchins monks wore sandals without socks and a brown tunic with a hood to cover their heads, called the “Cappuccio”.
The name of the Capuchin is derived from this cap, but not everybody knows that also the famous Italian coffee beverage “Cappuccino” has its name from the color of the hooded robes worn by monks and nuns of the Capuchin order.
