Matera is truly a magical city, a city like no other in the world and one of the oldest in the world.

Discovering Matera is like living a forgotten past and you feel like setting foot in a nativity scene; It is no coincidence that it is called the second Bethlehem and was the setting for Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ.

The two districts that make up the historic center called "Sassi” (stones)  are built on natural caves dug and expanded over the course of millennia. A labyrinth of pale limestone churches, monasteries, palaces and houses rises above the caves, all balanced on the edge of a ravine.

In the daytime, it is breathtaking; illuminated at sunset, it can make you cry.

Accompanied by your private local guide you will discover this unique place with its own typical courtyards surrounded by cave houses and learn about its fascinating history.

You will visit one of the unique Rock Churches and you will better understand the complicated development of the Sassi over the centuries and how deep they go underground, thanks to the mastery achieved by our ancestors.
