NO MAFIA TOUR IN PALERMO

A new way to visit Palermo, where each stop provides the opportunity for reflection on the phenomenon of the Mafia and civil mobilization against Mafia power. A three-hour walking tour accompanied by the stories of those who live in the city every day, to get to know it in its true essence, beyond common places. Our journey commences at the Teatro Massimo, often linked to "The Godfather" film imagery, then we set forth on foot toward the Mural of Legality, progressing to Piazza Beati Paoli. En route, we'll unravel the mythical, baseless ties between Natoli's novel sect and Cosa Nostra, all while traversing the renowned and picturesque Capo Market. Our subsequent destination is Piazza della Memoria, home to the memorial honoring judges felled by Mafia violence, nestled behind the Courthouse. Then, our path leads to the Cathedral, where we delve into the intricate interplay between the Mafia and the Catholic Church, reflecting on the anti-Mafia fervor of martyrs like Don Pino Puglisi.  Lastly, we arrive at the Municipio, historically emblematic of the union between the Mafia and politics. Yet, it has also borne witness to Palermo's Spring, a season characterized by transformation and rejuvenation.

The Mafia Memorial in Palermo, also known as the "Addiopizzo" Memorial, is a poignant and symbolic tribute to those who have fallen victim to the grip of organized crime in Sicily. This memorial stands as a powerful statement against the Mafia's influence and commemorates the lives of brave individuals who stood against their control. 

Located in Piazza della Memoria, the memorial consists of a simple yet impactful installation. It includes a large stone slab bearing the names and faces of courageous Sicilians—business owners, activists, and everyday citizens—who refused to pay protection money (known as "pizzo") to the Mafia. These individuals often faced threats, intimidation, or violence but stood firm against the Mafia's extortion practices. 

Surrounding the stone slab, you'll find plaques, inscriptions, and symbolic representations that honor the memory of those who resisted the Mafia's dominance. The memorial serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against organized crime and stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the determination of the Sicilian people to build a better future free from Mafia influence.
