Discovering Friuli's Splendor: Trekking Through Nature's Marvels in Friuli Venezia Giulia

One of the most beautiful and evocative walks overlooking the Gulf of Trieste is undoubtedly the one that, perched on the sea, connects Sistiana to Duino. The trail takes its name from the poet R.M. Rilke, who, as a guest at Duino Castle at the beginning of the last century, like Dante before him, composed his famous "Duino Elegies" there. Along the route, there are military positions open to the sea. The walk is short, not very challenging, but situated in a unique and spectacular setting. Nearby there is the Church of St. John in Tuba, built in the fifth century on the ruins of the pre-existing Roman temple and located near the Timavo Springs (where the Timavo River, part of its course underground, re-emerges on the surface) whose clear waters were celebrated by Virgil. The "Bocche" (mouths) are nothing more than the open-air "springs" of the Timavo River, which, after a long underground journey through the Karst, resurfaces here, about a hundred meters from its mouth. We start from the former quarry, facing the entrance of the Paleontological Site (currently closed to the public) of "Antonio," an 80-million-year-old Adrosaurus discovered here by chance during geological studies. A little further ahead, partly concealed by vegetation, we find the remains of a trench from the Second World War. Then you will go ahead to the splendid Val Rosandra – Dolina Glinšcice, now a nature reserve, is located within the territory of the Municipality of San Dorligo della Valle – Obcina Dolina, just a few kilometers from Trieste, right on the border with Slovenia. The area boasts significant natural interest, known for its rich variety of plant and animal species, the presence of surface karst phenomena, and numerous caves. An excursion in the reserve offers the opportunity to discover the history of these places, with numerous archaeological sites dating back to the prehistoric and Roman periods.
